Lions that lick their lips
Category: Lion-watching | Date: Nov 12 2008 | By: Seamus
I’m busy working on a talk, and decided to use this picture, which I took of a lion in Amboseli NP:
I have no particular reason for posting this image, I just like it. I was going to discuss some lion behavior, but thought better of it.
Wim, thank you for the donation. If you would like a full-size / higher res copy of this image or others like it let me know in the comment section and I’ll email it to you.

Thank you for the thank you Seamus
(and sorry it’s not a much larger amount).
Nice photo. I particularly like the way that his paws are concealing what’s left of the tourist’s flip-flop…
Are Lions, all predators, usually covered in flies when there’s no breeze? Are they, in fact, quite stinky?
I’d be pathetically grateful for anything you’d like to send my way.

About the flies, Wim - have you ever seen the pics Seamus shares every now and then of his cups of tea? If you ask him nicely, maybe he would send you one or two. They are high drama, guaranteed to turn a strong man pale.
It is my unscientific opinion that it isn’t smell as much as moisture which the critters seek out. Then again a lion in a bobbing cork hat would look kinda silly.
